The Inquiry Topic
For my inquiry topic I was thinking that I would do something surrounding body image and how that affects young women in society. I want to look at it from a average young woman's point of view and how body image is perceived. I’m not exactly sure what angle I’m going to view this topic on but I think there are a lot of factors that be considered.
One of them would be how public figures in society promote good verses bad models for body image. I would talk about musicians like Beyonce or Miley Cyrus and look at their interviews, music they make, music videos they create and determine what their view is. I would also look at actresses and other famous people like Angelina Jolie or the Kardashians and see what types of things they say/do to promote positive or negative body image for women.
Another important point would be what society as a whole promotes and how those things affect the view of young women and confidence/body image issues. I would also want to talk about how fashion/beauty magazines fit in, Reality tv, beauty bloggers, etc. There is a huge weight put on young women when it comes to their physical image and I want to explore that world and what famous and average people say about the topic in general. There are definitely women and men in pop culture who promote positive body image and strive for it but I wonder if that is enough in today’s society. How much good and bad is there being represented in our culture? There is also a ton of negative examples of body image and I want to know how that affects the audience and young women who look at these things.
More importantly, what results from this societal view on body image? How does that affect young women in general? Does it affect the health of women with plastic surgery, eating disorders, and damaging things women do to try and boost their body image and how they view themselves. Is it a societal issue? Is it a cultural issue? Do other societies and cultures have these types of problems? Is it just in America? There are many, many factors to be considered and I want to look at this topic from all angles before deciding what my point of view will be.
